English and Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering is a multifaceted career where we can perform in different fields at the labor level, that is why to acquire a higher academic level is important to have clear bases in English, this is of great help since it will allow the professional to overcome the barrier language skills and face new challenges such as pursuing a career abroad allows a massive evolution of the profession, using new techniques brought from other countries. These and many other benefits are possible thanks to learning a language as important as English.

Why   learning English?

Undoubtedly, mastering English is essential to have a better chance of finding a good job. If among our knowledge is the command of this important language, we will be considered better prepared candidates and more easily access to more relevant posts within any company. The increase in our work opportunities is spectacular when we master a language of the importance of English, since we will have access to all types of multinational companies or those that move in international environments, where workers are of different nationality and the English language is the one chosen to communicate with each other. Today, there are many causes and many different reasons why English has been become an international language (González Davies and Celaya Villanueva, 1992; Durán Escribano, 1999; Alcaraz Varó, 2000; Flowerdew and Peacock, 2001); in fact, its knowledge is almost an indispensable condition for professional success. (Fishman, 2002). Richards et al. (1992: 187) define an international language as "a

Language in widespread use as a Foreign Language or Second Language, i.e. as a language of international communication"

This also includes government agencies and state administrations, giving us an important part of our merits in any competitive-choice selection process. No matter which sector you move in, in general, English always gives you advantages over other candidates who do not speak this language, giving you more opportunities for internal promotion within any company, as well as access to better jobs.

According to several studies carried out by different institutes and universities including the University of Jail Stephen Rogers (2009) "To speak English is to speak of the universal language par excellence, the language most used when making international communications, especially in the important world of commercial transactions and finance. We speak of the official language of many countries, governmental entities and international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), Unesco or the European Union, among others. The reality is that the English language is widely spoken in many parts of the planet” taken from the magazine time (page 10)

English in Environmental Engineering

The environment is an issue that today is the most relevant in terms of importance and sustainability for all, since practically all people share the same environment and we have to protect it, English helps us propagate this idea in a more easy because it is the most talked about language in the world. This will allow us to globalize the interest by bringing messages to different countries. It also allows us to find solutions to various problems in Anglo-Saxon countries that have already been solved or are under investigation, this will allow Colombian engineers to be at the forefront in terms of scientific and technological advances, thus enabling them to carry out the career in the most effective way possible.

English is currently considered the most important language worldwide, either for those who speak it as a first language or those who speak it as a second language .In this sense, it can be said that the English language is present in almost all the world and is considered the main element of communication between very diverse cultures that share little or no trait in common. The phenomenon of globalization has greatly contributed to making English the most important and necessary language today, being understood as the language of the dominant countries worldwide

In conclusion in a world so globalized in English allows to carry information from one place to another in an effective and immediate way, in environmental issues this is essential because day by day we work to help our planet or preserve it, thanks to English we can transmit a message not only as engineers, but as human beings reoccupied by the situation of their planet.
